Where the data comes from

Every email checked, every sponsor verified

For every newsletter we track, we check every email it sends for sponsor placements. Every sponsor in Bellwether was seen in a real email. None of it is estimated, modelled or taken from a sponsor list.

Seen in a real email

Every placement comes from a real newsletter email, with the sponsor, the date it was sent and the newsletter it ran in.

Held to a bar

A placement only appears once we are at least 85% confident it is real. Anything uncertain is settled by a person, not shown to you.

Fresh every hour

Counts, trends and last-seen dates refresh hourly, so what you see is this month’s market, not last quarter’s.

What the sponsor database tracks

Observed placements, not estimates

Who is sponsoring

The brands running in the newsletters we monitor, with the ads they ran and when.

Where they run

Which newsletters each sponsor buys across, so you see the shape of a category rather than one title.

How much reach they buy

Audience behind each placement, so a sponsor’s spending pattern is legible rather than anecdotal.

How often they run

Placements per sponsor and per newsletter over the last 7 or 30 days, and when each one was last seen.

How crowded each category is

Which categories are drawing more sponsors this month and which have gone quiet, so timing is a decision rather than a guess.

Live detections

New sponsorships surface as we spot them, rather than landing in a report at the end of the month.

Everyone has a profile

One page per sponsor. One page per newsletter

Publishers use it to see who to pitch and how crowded a rival title is. Sponsors use it to see where their competitors run and what gets rebooked. Same data, two doors.

  • Sponsored issues, newsletters and estimated reach over 7 or 30 days
  • Every newsletter the sponsor runs in, with placements and last seen
  • Company details, website and LinkedIn, shown only when verified
  • Public preview for search; full profile for members

The catch

There isn’t one

A marketplace only works when both sides can price and plan with the same information. We are paid a commission when a booking happens, so members who know the market are the business model, not a cost to it. That is why Bellwether is free, and why it stays free.

Questions

Bellwether questions, answered

Is Bellwether really free?

Yes. It is free for every member of the marketplace, publisher or sponsor, with no trial window and no seat count. Comparable sponsor-intelligence tools charge in the region of forty to two hundred dollars a month.

Why give it away?

Because a marketplace only works when both sides can price and plan with the same information. We make money on commission when a booking happens, so better-informed members are the business model rather than a cost to it.

Where does the data come from?

We monitor a set of newsletters and record the sponsorships that run in them. It is observed placement data (what actually ran, and when), not estimates modelled from traffic.

Do I have to list inventory to use it?

No. Bellwether comes with any account. Publishers tend to use it to decide who to pitch and what to charge; sponsors use it to check a newsletter’s history before booking.

Does it cover every newsletter?

No, and we would rather say so. Bellwether covers the newsletters we monitor, and that set grows over time. It is a real sample of the market, not a census of it.

How does it help me price a placement?

Seeing which sponsors already buy in your category, how often they return and how much reach they are buying gives you a market reference point, instead of setting a rate from scratch and hoping.
